If you're not familiar and you are patching your Dell servers one file at a time, you will love SUU. If you can find if.
Every quarter when System Update Utility comes out, I spend about 30 minutes to an hour trying to figure out where it is and how to get it. Yesterday, I ended up calling Dell to try
So frustrating! I could google a link, but from any computer, internal or external, all I would get is an error when trying to download. He (the engineer) couldn't find it either, except in their private stuff. I ended up finding it while I was on hold, and I actually showed him how.
This was not his problem, it was a communication issue within Dell. It seems that the way their site is set up now, you must enter the service tag of a server to get it. Here's the process I used:
1. Go to "Support by Product"
2. Enter the service tag of a newish server. It can't be super old or the latest SUU won't come up in the drivers.
3. Go to "Get Drivers and Downloads."
4. Hit "View All Drivers."
5. Click "Show all files for this product."
6. Click "Expand all categories."
7. Now, hit CTRL + F (to find on page) and type this: SUU
8. You will now see SUU buried in the systems management category.
9. Download, mount, and patch.
10. ???????
11. Profit!
But seriously, 9 steps??
I am not one to bring a problem without offering some good solutions, so I hope you're listening, Dell:
Good: Don't require a service tag when downloading this (or any drive for that matter).
Better: do the above PLUS have your bloggers blog about it so it can be found on web searches.
BEST: Blast an email out to your users who own servers that SUU applies to with a direct download link that doesn't require a service tag. Do this immediately whenever SUU is released. Of course, provide an opt-out link in the email that only masochists would use.
