Why desktop configurations work out more expensive than laptops?

Recently, I was comparing the cost of laptop configuration per user against the cost of desktop configuration per user. Last week, I have purchased 2 Dell Vostro laptops (P/N:N059PSPCVN3568EMEA01_1801,N059PSPCVN3568_W10) with the following specs (15.6” FHD/i5/8GB RAM/256SSD/Win10Pro) for roughly 700$ each. I was trying to match similar configuration using a desktop configuration and somehow desktops would work out more expensive once you include the cost of the monitor and the wifi card. My requirements are 8GB Ram, 256GB SSD, Wifi, two monitors (i.e. can be either laptop+external monitor or 2 external monitors in case of desktops).

As such I have two questions:

1) Why does laptop cost less than a desktop? I have found one article (Quora.com) explaining this but I thought there is more to the story?

2) Even if I could find a configuration...
