One of our Optiplex 740 desktops just got a new motherboard. Diags showed everything was fine, but when I tried to login to Windows, I realized the mouse and keyboard weren't working. I tried various combinations of USB ports, rebooting, rebooting to safe mode, no luck. If I'm in Setup, or DOS (Floppy/Flashdrive), or any of the F2/F8/F12 screens, keyboard works fine. Tech suggested I update the BIOS, which I did. Still no USB. Then another tech suggested I apply update R132919 (Chipset A02), even though this system already had that update. I pointed out that the installer for that update only runs under windows, and since without the mouse/kybd I couldn't even login to windows, I wouldn't be able to install it. Then the tech started suggesting all sorts of silly things like swapping harddrives with an identical system, or reimaging the machine. Swapping harddrives obviously did nothing, as the problem moved to the other machine. Reimaging is not an option.
Has anyone gotten themselves into this sort of situation? How did you escape? TIA
