Connecting a server to a Synology Rackstation?

Hello!

Long time lurker, first time poster.

So, I'm picking up the pieces of a project and I need some input on what to do next.  A Synology Rackstation RS2414rp+ was purchased and populated with 12x4TB drives (RAID6).  We are trying to run ResourceSpace (DAM) and it doesn't seem to work properly on the device (surprise surprise).  Now, we're looking at getting a dedicated server to do the work but I need to use the Synology as the datastore due to limited budgets.

I have Dell R515's in the infrastructure currently and I was thinking of getting another unit (2x6C, 32GB RAM, 2x146GB RAID1) to connect to the Synology with the overall goal: Run ResourceSpace. Questions:

  • Does anyone have any idea/best practices on how I should proceed?
  • Does the Synology play nice with a server?
  • If so, how would I connect it to the server?
  • Dedicated switch for the 4x1Gbit NIC's on the Synology?
  • VLAN each NIC?

I've reached out to CDW and they don't really seem to have any answers for me so I figured I'd reach out to the wonderful community here!

Thanks for taking the time to help out!

J

Mods: wasn't sure if this belonged in hardware, feel free to move
