Dell EqualLogic and VMware 5.5

Hi All,

I have a question regarding our recently acquired Dell EqualLogic and VMware 5.5.

We recently acquired a Dell EqualLogic PS4100 with dual controllers and 24 x 600GB 10K SAS HDD's (22 in use, 2x spare).

This is connected via  2 x stacked Dell N3024 switches to 2 x PowerEdge R620's running VMware ESXi 5.5.0.

I have followed the Dell/VMware best practice document and enabled jumbo frames (9000 mtu), Disabled delayed ack and mapped 1 to 1 vmk to physical NICs with VMware round robin enabled to the configured storage on the EqualLogic.

To test the performance I configured a Windows 2008R2 VM with 1 x 45gb OS drive and 1 x 200GB data drive on a VMware ParaVirtual SCSi controller.

When running Iometer on the data drive I am seeing c4100 I/Os per second with a total MBs per second of 130 on a test of 8192 sectors using 32K 100% Read.

I am a little surprised that Dell EqualLogic are telling me that this performance is 'good' considering I think that the performance seems poor compared to our HP P4500.

Can anyone tell me what they think of these metrics please to check if I am going insane questioning this?!

If anyone requires any more info please ask.

Kind Regards
