Best way to buy Dell?

$

Does anyone know if Dell has anything close to what was in the Dell Consultant Network for smaller consultants? I manage a dozen different individual companies that have all be buying Dell for a long time but all together are probably less than $50K per year.

Since I was cut from the DCN due to my purchase volume being to small I have had a heck of a time getting quotes much less recommendations for good purchases and processing purchases (almost all of them are Dell Finance approved) has been painful.

I'd like to get back to one person that can just handle it all. All the customers are really small business customers but some are labeled differently. Today I was told one of the customers was "middle size" and given a name to email for a quote and that Dell employee replied back that she wasn't even in sales...

Too much work! I would...

Trying to install Windows server 2016 on Dell PowerEdge 2850

I was given an old 2850 to mess around with, and since I’m going to server 2016 classes next month I thought I would try to install it on old hardware. I had trouble getting the 2850 to boot from usb. This afternoon I was finally able to get it to boot from usb. Using bios\MBR\NTFS it goes to Windows is loading files, loads up first screen relatively quick, second Windows is loading files screen takes 5 minutes and boots right back into bios screen. Thinking maybe the usb was set up wrong, I plugged it into a Windows 7 machine I had laying around. It booted up fine(Note: it did give me an option to boot UEFI). Going to try bios\MBR\fat32 confit in the morning. Bios is latest and greatest version, I can post the other driver versions, when I get into work tomorrow.

Has anyone else run into this issue? What caused it?

Cloudy Screen on Laptop

I have couple year old DELL laptop. When the display is white or has white/bright colors, there are these cloudy rings visible in the middle of the screen. When there is a night sky or darker display, they disappear. I've adjusted the brightness, resolution, changed drivers, etc with no success. They are no permanent as it goes away when the display is dark or darker. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Hello team. I hope you all doing OK.

I have a question regarding an EMC VNX 5300. If someone could kindly take a look... would be much appreciated.

We've got an issue with one SPS (A). It got faulty. However, when replacing it with a new unit....then we get in the GUI a double SPS(A+B) failure! , BUT if we take out the new replacement unit and insert again the initial faulty SPS (A), GUI shows now the same result than initial = only one unit faulty (unit A).

I've been reading cummunity chats to try to solve the problem. Some say that there is a 'sense' cable that recognize the SPS's? and this could be the cause. They recommend to disconnect sense cable at first, then plug SPS and after that plug cable.

Other chat (emc community) says what follows (I copy/paste):

Raid card shows error but compute scanned it and its fine

I have an R710 server with and H700 Raid card with raid 1 on my data.  It showed orange on the server so I took it out and scanned it on a windows 10 computer and it said there were no errors.  I formatted the drive and replace it in the same slot and it rebuilt but again showed orange and the OMSA also showed a problem.  I removed it again and this time scanned it in the server through a USB ATA/ATAPI bridge and it shows OK.  Could there be a problem with the Raid Card?  I'm a little concerned.

Dell Poweredge R740 Raid Configuration

Hey all, So i've got some Dell R740's that i'm due to start configuring, how do I get Raid setup? I've already updated the firmware and tried Dells suggested method which is to go to the life cycle manager and select configuration wizards and then 'raid' When I do this I can only see the BOSS raid for the boot.

However, If i change to bios boot from UEFI then I can see the other controller listed and I can see the disks connected. I then see 'press ctrl-c' but that just hangs.

I'm really scratching my head on this one at the moment.

Slow Excel after update to 1709 on Optiplex 7050

First off, I am aware of the Realtek driver update to supposedly fix an issue with slow excel as reported here:https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/sln306701/slow-performance-issues-in-excel-when-openin...

and here:http://www.brucebnews.com/2017/07/a-possible-fix-for-the-excel-slow-file-opening-bug/

We are on Office 2016 Pro Plus.

Anyways, so I updated a few machines in our network using SCCM to push out the Windows 10 Enterprise 1709 upgrade. I've done this in the past without issues, but this time, everyone is reporting that Excel is slow to open (anyway it's done, through a recent spreadsheet or just excel it'self) It takes about 30 seconds. Once in, recent spreadsheets take about 15 seconds or more. Then to print, it takes about a minute. Struggles to list printers, then stops responding, then finally lists the printers..

Alerts for when new bios/drivers are available through Dell by mode/tag number?

Hello! I've successfully set up a script to run across a network that runs dell command | update, and am now trying to figure out a good schedule for it. One of my options is to run as needed, so I am curious if there is something on the Dell side (that I can't seem to find) or any other way to be made aware when a Dell model is due for an update of drivers, or especially BIOS. As of this moment I have 5 different Dell models running on the network, so I pick on 5 machines of each different model and if it has an update, the rest are updated consequentially. Thanks for any help!

Dell MD3420: Question regarding firmware update

Hey everybody,

I've installed a new Dell MD3420 storage in one of our remote sites last week.

The array serves as shared storage for a two node HyperV failover cluster consisting of two Dell R530 servers running Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter.

The array is direct-attached with 8 SAS cables to two Dell 12G SAS HBAs per server.

Setup was a breeze and performance is great.

I didn't upgrade the firmware of the unit, however. At the moment, the following firmware is installed:

Dell released a new firmware package in May, which I've already downloaded.

My question is: According to this document from Dell

https://www.dell.com/support/article/gu/en/gubiz1/sln303544/how-to-update-the-controller-firmware-of...

the update requires a production shutdown.

I'm guessing this means, shutting down all virtual machines which reside on the storage and then...

KVM type switch to share Zero Client and PC

I have the following

  • Clear Cube Zero client with two DVI ports and 4 USB ports connected to View Desktop in our dev environment
  • Dell Wyse Zero Client with a DVI and Display Port and 4 USB ports connected to the internet via View Desktop
  • Dell Precision T3500 with two Display Port ports and 6 USB ports connected to our mgt network
  • Two Dell P2715Q Monitors each with one HDMI port, DP (in), DP(out), mDP (in)
  • One Dell 24in Monitor with DVI and VGA ports

I need a switch that would allow me to switch between the systems but use the same keyboard, mouse, and monitor.

What type of KVM switch would I need for option A and B below?

I want to be able to have the keyboard, mouse, and both P2715Q monitors connected to our inside View Server work with the Clear Cube Zero Client and then switch over so I have one monitor, keyboard,...

Inspiron line and TPM

I am looking for 17" laptops for use at the front desk of a couple of our 1-2 day per week office locations. Because we are a medical office, I need TPM on these systems. I was looking at an Inspiron laptop for these systems, but was told with absolute assurance by Dell's online support that the Inspiron line does not have TPM.

BUT...

I have a 2017 15" Inspiron that I am using for domain admin stuff. When I went to turn on BitLocker on this system, it was fine doing it. This is with Windows 10 Pro. When I ran the System Information app, it reports that TPM 2.0 is installed. In fact, I have several Inspirons in various places, all of which ran BitLocker just fine.

Any thoughts on what is going on here? Is Dell lying to me about TPM on Inspirons? Does Windows 10 have something going on that lets it think there is a TPM in these systems?...

Intel P3700 with M620 in VRTX?

Hi All, Like many, I have been struggling with SSD performance in our VRTX, so am looking at the PCIE route to deliver performance for RDS and other real-time workloads. Having spent/wasted lots of money already on various drives and other VRTX parts that either don’t deliver performance or turn out to be incompatible, where I’ve not ordered the correct part number, I am now keen to order the right thing. Does anyone know if I can put a Intel P3700 into the VRTX PCIE slot and map it to one or more M620 blades? Running Hyper-V 2016 on the M620’s and they have both pass-through mezzanine cards so they can access shared storage and PCIE. Thanks in advance Spicers.

As an IT pro, managing PCs from day-to-day can leave little space for innovation in the workplace, as well as focusing on other tasks needing your attention.

PC as a Service (PCaaS) has been available to our enterprise customers for a while, but we recently launched PCaaS for Business designed for customers with a need for 20-300 units. Since providing PCaaS, it’s been nice to see that the IT Pros we’ve worked with have been able to simplify their PC lifecycle management by combining hardware, software, lifecycle services and financing into one all-encompassing solution. Some of the other benefits we’ve seen are:

  • Predictable budget planning

Power supply upgrade Dell R710

I recently installed a USB 3 PCI card on my Dell R710 server.  At the same time I loaded a fileserver (VM) and 2  extra 4 tb hard drives for the data.  When it booted up it told me that the power supplies were inadequate.  It has two 570 Wall power supplies.  I would like to change that to two 870 Watt but it looks like there may be a firmware upgrade required.  Is there anyway to upgrade the power supplies without shutting down the server?  Can I simply remove one of the 570 W and replace it with an 870 and then do the other one?  Seems like it might not be that simple.

Dell R740 HBA

All,

Dell can be very hit or miss on a lot of their accessories. Due to the numerous times we have had issues with Addon cards etc, we now only buy Dell addon cards that say they are compatible with the server we have and nothing else.

Problem we are currently having is we have a Dell R740 that we need to add a single SAS HBA card to. However, all of the HBA cards that i can find that are compatible with the R740 are all FC. Our tape library does not support FC so we need an HBA with SAS connector. Can anyone confirm if the HBAs for the R730 will work on the R740?

I have looked all over and can not find an HBA that is not FC for the R740.

Thanks!

Moving from Single Assignment storage to Multiple Assignment storage

Has anyone ever moved from Single Assignment to Multiple Assignment in a live environment?  I have a VRTX with two blades each assigned their own virtual disk.  Unfortunately I thought I would easily be able to setup Failover Clustering after I got our VMs migrated over to this environment.  It looks like I was wrong but I'm hoping I can install the Cluster services on each host, shut down all VMs, and then simply go onto my CMC and make the switch to multiple assignment and assign each blade to each others Virtual Disk.

Processor setting on Dell R710

I have a couple of Dell R710 servers that I just now noticed don't have the processors 64 bit support, HyperThreading, or Demand Base Switching enabled.  One server has E5540 processors and the other has E6520 Processors.  I assume I will have to shut them down and enable in the bios.  Is it worth it?

Problem with R710 processor

I have 2 Dell  R710 servers that have been working OK but one is very slow and I happened to notice in the Basic information (accessed by right-click on THIS PC in the file explorer that the E5620 processors have different speeds. The speed are 2.4 and 1.6.  I  wonder if one of the processors is bad.  How do I confirm that?  If it is how am I sure that it's the processor and not the Motherboard?

I thought if it were the processor I might update to an X5660 or 5670 to get the 6 core.  I'm sure I would have to change both but what kind of problems am I likely to have with an upgrade in processors?
