Is Dell still worth it?

$

Hi guys,

I was asked to decide if we go for one vendor only for server and/or client hardware.

Is Dell still so special in terms of quality, service, price, etc. so it's worth going Dell only?

I have some concerns with the Dell branded hardware and its replacement. I also didn't have a big hardware failure yet which would make their next business services worth it.

Is going one vendor only in general a good idea?

Thanks
Mike

Do I need to make a 64 bit installation disk, or a 32 bit installation disk?  When I looked up the system type in the control panel it is shown as an x86.

Dell XPS 15 Laptop - How Good is the Battery Life Really?

Hello all.

I've had a few nice one-off jobs pay out recently, so I am looking to upgrade my ageing work laptop for a new Dell XPS 15 pretty much top of the range piece of kit such as this one.

I have read a fair bit online reviewing this and other similar laptops and seen very varied comments on battery life for the laptop.

My day to day work involves a the usual web browsing / office documents, but also a lot of remote server management and running test VMs for server config/testing as well as the odd bit of gaming during the evening.

Does anyone have any actual real life experience of how well the battery lasts on an average day? I'm concerned slightly after reading it barely lasts 4 hours for web browsing alone with a review I read which is very different from the 8 hours+ I've seen somewhere else.

Many thanks in advance everyone, and...

ESXI 5.5 Drive Bay 3 ROMB Battery

OS: ESXI 5.5

Model: PowerEdge R710

Recently replaced the RAID battery as it displayed a warning on the little console on the server. I shut the host down and replaced the RAID battery. 11 Days later the little console is now flicking through the original RAID Battery failed error and a (what seems) normal bunch of letters and numbers.

If you look at the screenshot, this is also changing states from normal to alert quite frequently. I'm seeing a fair bit online about this but no real answers, apart from clear the logs and it should restore itself to a time before error messages or to update the firmware (which is always the first answer but i dont think it'll resolve it this time)? If anyone could shed some light on this it would be great.

I cannot freely reboot this host as it has about 30 running VMs on it.

What is the oder that Windows 10 Activates?

I am sorry if this has been asked before but I could not find it.

There has been alot of movement in my friends company recently so all hardware technicians and sys admins have been replaced in the last year.

New Windows 10 machines are getting a not activated message randomly.

From what I understand, they use a trial key on the generalized image deployed by FOG.

A KMS server is online and contains keys. Computers are hitting the KMS but not activating.

They believe that they are purchasing new Dell computers with OEM keys installed but cannot find it in the UEFI/BIOS.

What is the order that Windows 10 searches for activation?

and would an OEM key be picked up before the KMS key typically?

The pid.txt file is not being used.

I inherited lots of Dell servers where iDRAC was never configured. What’s the best practice for this? How do you have your iDRAC setup within your network, and what’s your favorite thing to use it for?

Unable To Boot Into New OS Install On Dell PowerEdge R730xd

Hey Friends!

I am going loco with this issue. So, I installed ESXi 6.5 (it is compatible) on Dell PW R730XD. The OS is installed on mirrored SSD, and there is also an additional RAID 10 array 7TB in size (SAS drives) for local storage which was created after I installed the OS. Since doing so, I have been getting the error in the screenshot and can't boot into the OS anymore. I even reinstalled the ESXi os and was able to see the previous install.

I followed the advice in this Dell KB " If the system fails to boot in to ESXi, set SD card as first boot device in boot sequence."https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/us/en/04/vmware-esxi-6.x/esxiiigpub-v1/booting-esxi?guid=guid-f...

I tried booting from C: and also tried from SD. It seems things stop working when I added the second array.

I just wanted to see if anyone has any ideas or come across the same issue we are having.

We have two OptiPlex 3060 ordered at the same time with the same config. Both have a 500GB hard drive and 16GB Intel Optane drive. Both have it-8400 processors and 8GB of ram. Running Windows 10 Pro. They also have Dell Pro Support.

These were in use for a few months before the started having issues. The first time one of the desktops would not boot, no issue we ran Dell diag everything passed, reinstalled Windows and put back into production. A few days go by and the other desktop does the same thing, again passed Dell diag reinstalled Windows and put back into production.

A few days ago the one computer boots just fine, we can login, but after login we get a black screen. Tried logging in as the administrator and another user same thing a black...

System clock changes at random

The machine is a Dell XPS 13" 9365, just about 1 year old. We have 5 or 6 of these deployed to users, and only 1 is having this issue. We've run driver and firmware upgrades, and Windows 10 Pro is fully patched. We have tried wiping and reinstalling the OS from the ground up as well.

What's the issue? The time on the system clock randomly changes! It looks to me like it only happens while the machine is actively in use and on battery power. I can leave the machine with the power adapter plugged in overnight, awake, and the clock's right the next morning. I can sleep the machine either on power adapter or on battery and it holds the correct time. The times I have seen the clock randomly changed, I've been actively using it...you'll just be sitting there surfing the web and look down at the clock, and it's off by several hours in either...

Dell Poweredge 2900 DVD drive burned out after replacing backplane

Hi all
I recently replaced my 1x8 SAS backplane after the other one gave a failsafe error 1219.

After I booted and logged in successfully I started to smell burned plastic. Not thinking it was the server I closed up the hard ware and went about my time until I got an alert the the server was down again.

When I went out there there was a strong smell of burned plastic. I immediately opened the side door after disconnecting the power and observing the same error codes on the display and saw the power from backplane to DVD player was completely burned up. Upon further review the entire back of DVD player was destroyed.

Any ideas?

C6320 C6300 Fan Controller Update

Hi Spiceheads,

I wondered if anyone can assist us with a problem we’re having with C6320 chassis firmware updates.

Essentially we’re running the chassis in bare metal mode (no operating system) and are trying to update the Fan Controller.

Unfortunately none of the files work in the Drac and all of the instructions seem to infer that we should install Linux.

We have installed a Linux OS but the installation instructions for the fan controller file are pretty poor.

Can anyone who has had previous success assist with this?

Thanks for your time!!

Latitude E5540 won't boot to USB or CD, but will to HDD.

Latitude E5540 won't boot to USB or CD, but will to HDD.
I have a Latitude E5540 and can't seem to boot to USB or CD, but it boots fine off the HDD. If I hit F12 during POST, I can get to the boot selection screen and select the appropriate device.

If I try USB or CD, the screen remains black and the laptop does nothing, even after leaving it for 15-30 minutes.

This is the only E5540 I have. Most of the other latitudes I have are E5520, E5530, and E5550. Those models seem to have no problems booting via USB or CD. I'm not sure if it's an issue with the model, or just a setting somewhere.

I checked the BIOS settings. Originally it was set to boot using UFEI and secure boot disabled. I switched to legacy boot, and I still wasn't able to boot from CD/USB.

The laptop was running BIOS version A05. I updated to A23, but there was no...

We have a number of dell laptops, Precisions with TB3 ports and Latitudes with USB-C 3.0 ports.  Is it possible to use the TB docks with the Latitudes?  I did a quick test with a TB dock and 5590 USB-C. The laptop would sort of recognize power (got a notification for low power usb source but started charging) but no video out or ethernet.

PERC H710 - RAID 5 SATA new disk negotiated speed 1/2 of other disks in RAID

$

Hi there, some advise please.

I have a 3 disk RAID5 setup in the Dell PowerEdge T420 with PERC H710 controller.

I have just had 1 of the disks replaced due to disk failure.  The new disk is the same spec as the 2 original disks.  Disks are 1TB SATA 3.0 Gbps.

All OK except I've noticed in OSMA that the negotiated speed of the new disk is 1/2 that of the 2 original disks.  Negotiated Speed is 1.5Gbps v Capable Speed of 3.0 Gbps.

Q1.  Why is this happening?

Q2.  Will it have a major impact on performance (this 'may' seem like an odd question, but I've never come up against this before).

Q3.  Can anything be done about it?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Cheers

Pete
