FX2s CMC firmware update

I need to update the CMC firmware in FX2s chassis from v2.10.200 to v2.30.200. I downloaded the upgrade from Dell, extracted the fx2_cmc.bin file, and uploaded it to the system. When I apply the update, it errors with "Firmware Update Unsuccessful: Internal Error. Reset the CMC and try again."

What does the Reset CMC command do? Do I need to schedule downtime of the VM's running on the blades in the chassis, or is the reset a non-disruptive procedure?


Dell Optiplex 980 onboard VGA not working

Hello everyone,

I have an optiplex 980 where it currently has an extra graphics card which used to work but its now dead.

So I have tried connecting the computer via VGA through the onboard gfx module.

Nothing displays on the screen and all you get is the 2 and 4 diagnostics lights on when you switch it on.

I cant get into the bios to get it enabled and I fear the only way is to connect another card - which I dont have at the moment.

Any ideas what I can do to get the computer to enable the onboard VGA port?

Dell Precision T5810 Does not detect any drives connected to SATA ports except 2

Hi, 

So my problem is that as I'm upgrading Dell precision T5810 workstations from windows 7 to windows 10. There is two SSD drives to these workstations. It only detects the CDROM SATA and the P0 which has the drive with the OS. Once I plug in the SATA to the other HD ports it doesn't come up, not even on BIOS. 
Boot option: Legacy
SATA operation: AHCI 
Here's what I have tried:
- Checked that the SATA ports are enabled in BIOS 
- Installed all Firmware updates dealing with the machine
- Tried all other SATA ports
- This happens on every machine I upgrade to Windows 10 
If I revert and plug the drive with Windows 7 , everything works well.
I'm wondering if there is a reason or something I'm missing?   

Dell Precision 5810 No Audio and other problems

I'm having a few issues with this PC. It was running fine, then late last week, I noticed that I got no sound from the computer. I checked and I see that it now says, "no audio device installed." I have read every forum and help post I can find and nothing has solved the issue. Most posts say its a driver issue but no matter what I do, nothing resolves the issue. I have even installed a USB sound card but that also doesn't work. Machine still says no audio devices installed. I'm not sure if its related, but I also can not connect to a file share server anymore. I can connect fine on other machines but not this one. I have also noticed a few other small things, like I can't delete files from the desktop. But, if I restart the machine the files are gone. I have uninstalled recent updates, ran virus scans, ran disk checks via cmd line,...

I have a Latitude E5470 and Latitude 5480 laptops.  Are the docking stations interchangeable for those laptops?

Dell XPS 17 and WD19TB Docking Station, Multi Monitor

I must be missing something with the technology and looking for some assistance... I have brand new XPS 17 9700, I also have Dell WD19TB Docking station.

I'm trying to get my 3 monitors to connect. At best, I can only get 3 of the 4 displays to show at any given time.

I have 2 Dell 2009w monitors, connected to the WD19TB Dock with DVI to Display Port cables
I have 1 Lenovo T2424 monitor connected to the WD19TB Dock with an HDMI cable.

Is it even possible with this setup to get output from all 4 displays? Right now, the actual laptop display is off, the 3 monitors are displaying the output. Everything I try and extend this display to the "off" monitor, it disconnects another monitor.

Dell PowerEdge - iDRAC not ready, Case fan running at high RPM

Repurposing an old Dell PowerEdge T320 server. Ran updates from a Dell Platform Specific Bootable ISO. All went well until the reboot following updates.

Problem symptoms include:

  • BIOS message, iDRAC is not ready, iDRAC initialization error
  • SWC0700: iDRAC is not ready. The configuration values cannot be accessed.
  • Case fan running at high RPM
  • No light behind front panel LCD screen

I’ve tried:

  • Holding down the “I” button on the front panel for 30 sec.
  • Removing power from server and holding down power button for 30 sec.
  • Reinstalling iRRAC firmware
  • Re-running Dell Platform Specific Bootable ISO

It does not have an iDRAC SIM card.

Any other ideas concerning how to fix this or would it require a new motherboard to fix (not worth the time and cost)?

Any suggestions to preclude this from happening on other Dell servers during updates?

I'm drowning in Dell Sliding Rail Kits

I have around 35 Dell 1U rail kits that are brand new, never used that my customer is burdened with "disposing of".  It baffles me that someone is going to have to pay to properly dispose of brand new Dell hardware accessories that came with the equipment.  Short of that is that we had to order static rail kits for some installations (2-post rack, etc) so we have leftover BRAND NEW parts that we need gone.

**If I recall correctly, these are the 1U sliding kits that come with the Dell R640**

This is for deployments I'm doing up in the WA state area that will possibly end at the end of the year.  Any ideas on where I could go?  Any kind of pointer in the right direction is greatly appreciated.

Google T4 720xd not booting

Hi everyone!

I received a Google T4 Search Appliance and I’m having some trouble getting it to boot. Everything works normally up until it gets to:

“Lifecycle Controller: Collecting System Inventory”

Where it’ll just hang forever at 25%. The light on the back is blue but will occasionally turn amber and blink while the fans rev up, but it quickly quiets down and turns blue again. The BIOs are locked so I cannot disable this feature, and without getting past that message I cannot boot a usb to update the BIOs to bypass the password. As far as I’m aware I have no access to idrac, BIOs, or the lifecycle controller. I’ve reseated the memory, the cpu, removed all hdds, imaged a usb with multiple different settings and isos, and so on. Is there something I’m overlooking here? At this point I might just buy a mobo and swap it in but I don’t...

Hi, I'm trying to restore RAID 6 on a Dell R730/PERC H730 Mini. Had a failed drive, I replaced it and it RAID did not rebuild automatically. 

The server is out of warranty and Dell is unable to provide support. I'd be happy to pay for support if someone can point me to a business that does this..

Hello Everyone,

We have an older Dell R420 that was being used as a single app server using the motherboard controller and four cold-plug SATA drives as individual Windows drives/partitions.

After the C: drive failed the application was upgraded/rebuilt as a VM over on our main VMWare setup and the physical drive was replaced.

Now I'd like to be able to make use of that server, if possible, with a RAID array and ESXi. So I bought and installed a H710P card. The card is detected and everything is happy until it tries to detect physical drives. I can't seem to find the magic setting(s) to get the four drives detected by the H710P.

I've tried disabling the H110 completely in the BIOS (the OFF setting) and tried each of it's other modes - no go. So while the H710P is compatible with the R420 is the fact that we're running SATA drives the...

Move cursor seamlessly with multiple screens

I would like to maybe find a Display Management software that would allow for my cursor to move seamlessly across my three screens. My main monitor is 32 inches, and my two side monitors are 28 inches. I want to be able to move my cursor from the middle monitor to either of the other two without having the cursor get stuck if I by chance move it across close to a corner. 

Non-Thunderbolt Dock vs Thunderbolt 4 connection on Laptop?

Greetings Spiceheads!

I have what SHOULD be a simple question, but apparently no one has documented an answer that I can easily search yet.

My question is this: Can a Dell docking station (in this case WD19) without Thunderbolt capability deliver a charge to a Dell laptop with a Thunderbolt 4 port (example: Dell Inspiron 17 3793)?

I already know it doesn't work in reverse (Thunderbolt dock to non-thunderbolt laptop). Unfortunately I tested that myself when I accidentally ordered a Thunderbolt dock without realizing it for a different laptop that was not Thunderbolt compatible.

Dell Alienware R11 Display Sleep Wave Issue?

Hi there,

  I just got my new Dell Alienware R11 last week and facing so many issue on this system. I need some help why my machine every time I am walking away for few hours and came back the screen going dark cant see any wake up? I press the any key on the keyboard and moving the mouse nothing show up I have to force press the power down and turn back on. That every most of the time. Also I did update all the drivers and doing Windows update but not get any luck.

Optiplex Network card stopped working

A user with a Dell Optiplex 3040 (just out of warranty unfortunately) has an ethernet card that does not work correctly. It shows as connected to an unknown network but cannot ping anything. I have him connected via wifi which works fine except for video conferencing so he really wants me to get his wired network connection working again.

Strangely I had the same thing happen a year or so ago on another identical PC. Dell had me do everything they could think of and then gave up and sent a tech out with a new motherboard, but by then it had started working again all on it's own.

A few months ago the same thing happened with a different user but before I got aaround to contacting Dell it just started working again by itself.

I've done everything I can think of with the current user - but no luck. I asked him to wait a bit but it's been a...

Onboard Ethernet not working when docked to a DELL PR02X docking station

Hey there everyone,

 I have an end users that is having some issues with their onboard Ethernet connection. When he's disconnected from the Dell PR02X docking station, it appears to work fine - However when he IS connected to the docking station, only the Ethernet port on the docking station itself works. I was looking around online and there doesn't seem to be much data on this issue - The only thing I've found online and tried was to turn off 'power-save' mode for the onboard NIC (which didn't do anything, I didn't think it would). There doesn't appear to be any drivers for the docking station, and all hardware drivers have been updated on the user's end. Hell, it could be a feature that the docking station auto-disables any onboard connections, but I'm just guessing at this point. Any ideas?

We just purchased 1 S4148T-ON and S4128F-ON Dell/EMC switches.

I am having trouble understanding how to access/configure these without having to use CLI. I have nothing against CLI, but I am not that good with it at all and I have enough to do without having to go through all of the instructions and configure these switches via CLI.

I see references to ONIE software but so far even looking into that, it appears to be all CLI install onto a NIX OS. 

I am a Windows OS guy and again I have nothing against NIX but I have enough to do without having to learn all that.

Any help is appreciated.

Is anyone else having repeated issues with Dell rescheduling service calls?  For the second time in two weeks I have had a system in need of repair, with ProSupport Plus, and my service call has been rescheduled. The last one they actually sent a replacement system because the part that they needed was on backorder for another month. I'm just trying to figure out why I am paying extra for ProSupport Plus when Dell is seemingly unable to hold up their end of the bargain of next business day service. I can't be the only one with this problem.
