Dell TB 18DC - Too chunky for its own good?

$

Look at this behemoth of a plug. This dock will only work on Dell Precision models as that does not look like it can be split. Nor is this plug removable from the dock unit itself, if it is the same as the other TB16 docks.

At some point I feel like you need to ask yourself if this is a good idea.

Sorry I just had to rant a bit. I've been setting up a bunch of TB16s and I need to vent after being told about the TB18's and looking at this picture of them.

Optiplex 9020 - Bizarre F1 to retry boot issue

We have one of many Optiplex's here that is displaying odd behaviour on startup - power on, it will always come up with 'No Boot Device Found, Press F1 to retry boot' - you press F1 and then it happily boots into Windows. It wouldn't be a huge issue but a. it's a headless machine so it's a hassle to press F1 and b. it's bugging me!

It's currently on the latest BIOS but it's done it on about three different versions. Boot is UEFI, no Legacy ROMs enabled. Boot device is an SSD. Windows is 1607 LTSB. I've removed everything but the Windows Boot Manager from the boot options, made no difference.

Any ideas?

RAM Question for Dell Optiplex 990 MT

Hi, When I got my Optiplex 990 MT I replaced the 4GB inside of it (1 Stick) with Crucial's Ballistix 16GB kit (2 sticks of 8gb) DDR3 ( 1600 MT/s PC3-12800 CL9 at 1.5V UDIMM 240-Pin). I didn't even think that maybe the Optiplex might support more than just the 16gb as I read somewhere it might. Should I try installing the left over 4gb stick to add to it, or will it cause issues? The stick reads that its a Samsung stick of RAM with the specs 4GB 2Rx8 PC3 10600U, I have other sticks of ram laying around as well doing nothing, I will take some photos to see if they're usable as well to expand my computers RAM.

I would really appreciate any clarity around this and if it's possible and the pro's and con's of doing something like this as well would be great (and a learning exp. for me)

I am trying to install Windows Server 2008 R2 on Dell PowerEdge R710

Hello Friend,

I have on Dell PowerEdge R710 and I am trying to Install Windows Server 2008R2 on it.

I have configured RAID 5, one Virtual Volume of eight drive.

I don't know How I go ahead to install Windows 2008R2.

New install, Blue screens

I just received a previously enjoyed T620 fromxByte Technologies.

Server 2016 installed fine, machine blue screening intermittently. Diags via Lifecycle controller would show memory errors occasionally but would sometime pass. Eventually tracked it down to one stick causing the problems, or so I thought.

Running system with 1 or 2 of the assumed good sticks, still getting blue screens. Reinstalled Windows numerous times, recreated Raid Array, etc., etc. Tried Server 2012R2 for giggles as well as Hyper-V Server which is what will be installed eventually and having same problem.

All firmware up to date.

Any thoughts? Since I just received this, I don't want to start replacing parts unless I can determine what is bad. Probably going to ask XByte to replace it.

What causes F/W in Fault State -MFI Register State 0XF0FF2202?

I have a R620 server that worked fine for about six months until today. I get this message during boot process "F/W in Fault State -MFI Register State 0XF0FF2202". I can access this controller by hitting Ctrl+R but I cannot see any drives in the utility. Actually, drives don't spin up, no LED activities on drives. This is what I have done so far:

1) Checked the cable from motherboard to hard drive backplane and verified that power is coming to the drive backplane.

2) Removed all drives but one and attempted to verify if any of the drives is causing it. I repeated that with all four drives.

3) Disconnected cable from the storage controller to the drive backplane.

4) Updated system BIOS and associated components, NICs, storage controller and iDRAC.

None of these steps changed the message. I suspect that the drive backplane went bad but I hope...

Dell Poweredge R540 Raid 6 reconstruction taking multiple days.

Hello,

I have a Dell Power Edge R540 with 2 raid arrays. The first one is a raid 1 for Server 2016 the second one is a raid 6 that currently has 6 4TB drives. The raid controller is a PERC H730P. I am trying to expand the raid 6 by adding 4 more drives to it. I log into the iDRAC which is version 9 express. I have logged into the iDRAC and added the 4 new drives to the raid 6. (The new drives are the exact same model and size as the existing) This was Friday night the system said the operation was completed successfully and the raid array started reconstructing. It is now Monday morning and it says it is at 6%. I was not expecting it to take this long. Is this normal? Should I be worried? The space that should be added to the raid array has not shown up in disk management in server 2016 yet. The lights on the four new drives are...

TZ-500 Uri list not working like in my TZ-215

Hi!

In my company we recently buy a TZ-500 to replace our old TZ-215. We migrate all the settings and policies, but we noticed the URI list doesn't work like before.

In our TZ-215, we have general policies, and with URI list we made exceptions for some users. This way, we have some 5 o 6 policies general by department and use the URI's for some exceptions like Twitter for RRHH Supervisor, or similar. So we select some policies to the users, and the TZ read all the polcies and if one allows the traffic, then the connection goes OK.

The TZ-500 read the first policy you have on your profile, and if this policy deny this web site or traffic, just stop on this policy, deny this connection, and doesn't read the others.

For example:

- TZ-215 - User : TEST
Policies: Internet STD - DMZ user- Twitter.
Web: Twitter
result: Allows the navigation, because...

Dell R330 with PERC H330 RAID Configuration?

I am a network engineer by trade and this has gotten thrown into my lap so now I have to figure it out. I have about 18 Dell R330 with the PERC RAID controller on it. I need a fairly unique setup. I need to build a server on a HDD then pull the drive. Fly it to the site (all over the world) turn on the Make the Drives that are currently installed RAID compatible(this wipes the installed drives) then put the configured drive that I carried with me into Bay 0 boot  up the server running RHEL and then add the second drive to the Array. So far I have no luck and all the reading I am doing mostly confuses me. (network guy not storage guy)

 Any help would be appreciated

Trouble booting after RAID 1 disk replacement

Here is the configuration

Dell T320
Perc H710 controller
Windows Server 2012 R2
Set to "BIOS" boot method

In Open Manage 4 virtual disks listed

Disk 1 "Primary" RAID 1 with 2 X 1TB drives
Disk 2 "Storage" RAID 1 with 2 X 2TB drives
Disk 3 "ServerBackup" RAID 0 with single 3 TB drive
Disk 4 "WorkstationBackup" RAID 0 with single 6TB drive

My problem is that the "Storage" drive is running in degraded mode with one disk failing. I copied off all the data and replaced both drives with new 4TB drives. Using the Perc interface I created a new RAID 1 volume but since I was short on time I did not initialize the virtual drive (it had been a lengthy process for me in the past). So far so good

However when restarted the server it would not boot with a "boot device not found" error. I tried a number of fixes to no avail. Finally I reinserted the original...

Are the latitude 7490's really this bad?

$

We have purchased 4 Latitude 7490s (and one 7290) and the 7490's have been nothing but a pain in the ass. A combination of the TB16 and these have been a real nightmare and my users are really pissed.

- I have updated literally everything under the sun every single day with BIOS, Firmware, drivers, and the docks are still terribly unreliable

- I've already had 2 motherboards swapped

- One system keeps bluescreening with WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR which seems to be hardware failure of some sort (haven't had time to investigate)

- Dell asked me to ship my system in for analysis but instead just swapped the motherboard and palmrest (while doing nothing to figure out why I cannot update dock firmware) which made the smart card reader not work at all (why even waste time asking me to send it in at this point since it could have been done on...

Dell Affiliate Program

I recently started working at a nonprofit.  We have access to discounted hardware and software through TechSoup.  One of their options is to purchase hardware through the Dell Affiliate Program.

Has anyone used this?  There is a $10 fee to get access and I don't want to pay to join to find out that it is just certain models that we wouldn't buy of the systems are listed with an inflated rate to offset the discount you receive.

One of the things that turns me as red as Bluto in the 1980 Popeye movie (look it up!), is that we have no return rights with anything we buy from Dell through the Premier portal. If I make a configuration mistake, for example, then I have to eat the cost or try to resell it elsewhere. Most of the time it all works out, but sometimes we've made costly mistakes.

(There have been two exceptions when a rep misheard my requirements and shipped me wrong equipment. I never heard from him again after two mistakes. Maybe he was canned. I was able to return that equipment.)

Dell representatives in the fairly distant past have confirmed this to be true. If we didn't like it, we could *snicker* go to HP *lung clearing guffaws until the line goes dead*.

I'm incredulous. At the least, consumer-level regulations usually prevent sucks-to-be-you...

Dell Inspiron 24-3455

Hey guys, weird issue here. I'm trying to upgrade a Dell 3455 to a SSD with windows 10. It absolutely will not work at all for me as of the moment. There are a lot of issues I found on Google that seemed to match mine closely, but not exactly.

I don't care if this thing boots legacy instead of uefi. I read that doing legacy boots work but uefi with secure doesn't. They said disable secure boot. There's no combination I can find to make uefi work at all.

I'm now I'm the middle of trying legacy options. When using a bootable usb (I made 3 thinking my last 2 were corrupt) it will not install at all, it gets hung up when you click next to install after deleting partitions and kicks back an error. I've even done a clean all with disk part a few times thinking that would help.

The only way I could get either to install is by using a bootable...

Hard drive with raid1

$

I have a couple Dell R710 servers that replicate to each other.  I had them both set up with Raid 1 because I thought that if one drive failed the other would be able to continue.  However I had a Raid 1 set up on the drive that my OS (HyperV host and clients) and one of the drives failed.  It brought the whole server to such a slow state that it would hardly work.

My question is do you recommend Raid1 on drives that have operating systems?  It seems like it just gives twice the chance for failure if one drive failing will cause the whole system to stop.  What are the thoughts.  Would I be better to just use a single drive for the OS?  If so how do I set up without raid on the OS and raid 1 on the data and backups with R710 servers.  I can't find a way to do it.  I have H700 raid controllers on both servers.

Perc6/e & H700 in R710?

I've got a R710 with a H700 Raid and I'm wanting to add a MD3000 PowerVault.

I've got a Perc6/e card to use but was wondering if both Raid cards can work in the same server.

Thanks

What brand of laptops does your company use? Might be leaving Dell...

We've been using Dell laptops since our company started many years ago. For the past couple years, we've been getting the XPS15 with 512 HDD, 16Gigs of Ram, and an i7 processor.

We need to order some more for some new hires and our Dell rep has told us that they no longer can sell that configuration. Instead, our new configuration would be XPS15 with 256 HDD (half), 8 Gigs of Ram (half), an i5 processor (slower), and a new 4k screen (instead of 1080, which we have no use for in a business ssetting). Oh, and the price will be the same as what we've always paid.

What the hell is up with that?

Anyway, this doesn't work for us so we need to re-evaluate our contract with Dell to see if we need to switch lines, if our rep is lying to us, or if we dump Dell and switch to something else.

So, just curious if most everyone uses Dell or if there are...
